These are ideas taken from metal gear online which I thought I would provide because if this has to be a lobby shooter, it might as well work in a smart way lol. Also I think it should be 3rd person because FPS mechanics are stupid and are always overshadowed by 3rd person shooters, but that's probably less possible right now and not what this is about :) moving on!
How the MGO matchmaking worked was that the rooms were made by the players themselves, now we don't need to have the ability to choose how many clones are available or to pick the maps (although this is highly recommended) but just the ability to have our own rooms available where people don't have to leave right after each match, this will be a great improvement. Why? Well imagine you're getting proto stomped to the point where it's just unbearable, what do you do? Go to a different room, or make your own, this way you introduce more flexibility and consistency at the same time, people don't need to get frustrated and feel like they're being forced into matches where they don't know what they're up against every time, and they can fight the same people every time if they choose and just get used to their tactics and find ways to subvert each other, dynamic gameplay!
This will also allow the team deploy mechanic that everyone's been asking for, allowing more than 1 squad to come in together, it will allow corp battles, it will allow people to effectively do training, it will allow people to have time to learn the maps, test out guns, or just play against their friends. This way you can also have matches where nothing is lost or gained by playing so people spam that proto suit they're reluctant to use or screw around with tanks or run around with a plasma cannon because who gives a crap and maybe they just wanna blow off steam? You can also allow people to toggle on or off friendly fire to add a really interesting mechanic. It will allow player driven games where basically people can decide if they want to have a match where everyone is using a forge gun and nothing else, or everyone is using nova knives, or have a team full of nova knives vs a team full of scrambler pistols because why the hell not?
Here's the biggest improvement I think I can see from a development point of view, adding in mechanics (things like friendly fire, non stat affecting rooms) wouldn't have to be all encompassing, imagine the game community's reaction if you said ok we're turning on friendly fire, now imagine it if people could choose whether or not the include that in their game? Alot less scary isn't it? I mean I'm sure that that would've happened anyway, just a different choice in the battle finder, but you get the point.
In conclusion, if you let the players have a little power in how the game works, there would probably be less headaches and a bigger audience.
P.S. This can also lay the groundwork for other ideas that can come in the future, for example if you want a PVE game mode or even a mode that isn't about fighting, maybe allow people to do things like scavenge for resources and earn some cash or SP without having to be in a fight all the time, or just have rooms where it's a huge open map with random events triggering but generally allow people to do whatever they want. |
